A key weapon in the fight against drug overdoses will soon be more available across New York.

State Health Commissioner Dr. Mary Bassett issued a standing order for naloxone to be dispensed by all state pharmacies without a prescription.

The medication is administered after an overdose to block the effects of opioids.

The Department of Health says this is the closest to making naloxone “over the counter” without FDA action.

The state order takes effect August 15.
