With racing season underway at Saratoga Race Course, the Backstretch Employee Service Team of New York is busy fulfilling its mission of caring for the people who care for the horses.

Nancy Underwood, who entered a new position as executive director this year, and assistant director Sheriza Serravento, are proud of the important role their organization serves within the racing industry.

“We’re responsible for the oversight of all of the medical, mental health, social services, and addiction programming for the men and women who care for the horses,” Underwood said.

Because of BEST’s efforts, New York racing has a good reputation for treating workers well.
“Our job is to make sure that we have the healthiest workforce back there, so everybody knows they want to come live, work, and race in New York because they know they’ll be taken care of,” she said.

BEST not only supports racetrack employees is through health services – they also host social events like bingo nights and weekly dinners.

“Everybody is happy, and they say it’s the best place when they go to Saratoga, it’s their favorite spot,” Serravento said.
