Man with Down syndrome earns very high karate rank

FAYETTEVILLE, N.Y. – A 59-year-old Syracuse-area has man earned his 5th-degree black belt in karate. The rank is believed to be the highest for a person with Down syndrome in the United States.
Eric Scharoun’s journey first started 30+ years ago.
Even at age 59, Scharoun says he has no plans of stopping – a continued push to be the best he can be in the sport and discipline he loves.
