New guidelines are expanding the window for new mothers to breastfeed infants.

The guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatricians call on new mothers to breastfeed exclusively for the first six months because it benefits the health of both the infant and the parent.

After six months, other foods can be introduced.

The guidelines also urge physicians to support parents who choose to continue to use breast milk along with other foods for two years or more.
