State leaders seek to shut down illegal cannabis leaders

New York state leaders are taking steps to shut down the illegal cannabis market.

Gov. Kathy Hochul’s executive budget includes a plan to broaden the authority of the Office of Cannabis Management and local government agencies to padlock stores selling cannabis without a license.

The proposal will strengthen enforcement authority, expedite the closure of unlicensed shops and deter illicit activity.

“New York must take action to close illicit cannabis storefronts continuing to open and operate across the State,” Governor Hochul said in a statement. “Strengthening New York’s equitable cannabis industry and protecting the hard-working small business owners operating in the legal market are top priorities, and the best way to accomplish those goals is by expediting the shutdown of unlicensed shops.”
