East Greenbush fire displaces six from home
Six people were displaced from their home after a fire in East Greenbush early Thursday morning.
Firefighters received a call at about 5:20 a.m. reporting a fire at 72 Southern Ave. Four people were home at the time of the fire, according to Seth Tracy, spokesperson for the Clinton Heights Fire Department. Everyone made it out safely.
The fire was contained to one bedroom, Tracy said. The door was closed, which limited the spread.
“It’s important to sleep with the bedroom door closed in the event of a fire. That can significantly reduce the fire and smoke spread to the structure,” he said.
There was significant damage to that bedroom and smoke damage throughout the house.
Firefighters were at the scene for about two hours. The East Greenbush, Defreestville and Best Luther fire departments also assisted at the scene. Castleton provided station coverage.
The cause is under investigation, but Tracy said it appears to be accidental.
The American Red Cross is helping four adults and two children with shelter, food and clothing.
