Shataya Scott has braided hair since she was a teenager.

While braiding is so popular, it’s cost prohibitive for some parents. So, Scott offered up a proposal to officials at her children’s school – she would braid the hair of the kids at the school – if they kept their grades up. That was back in 2015. She has since braided the hair of more than 100 kids.

Scott started a workshop this summer teaching young people how to braid hair. Her goal is to have similar programs in every school, in every state, she said.
