Hochul announces plans to help create more diverse teacher workforce

Gov. Kathy Hochul announced plans and funding to help New York create a workforce of teachers that is more diverse.
It is being done through the Empire State Teacher Residency Program.
The plan makes $30 million available for the residency program and also directs the New York State Education Department, working with colleges and universities to issue guidance to school districts. That guidance will help schools develop programs to attract underrepresented candidates into the teaching profession.
The first round of the money – $11.9 million – will go to several school districts. They include schools in Albany and Chatham.
