Hochul removing barriers in effort to recruit more school bus drivers

Barriers being removed in order to find new school bus drivers

Gov. Kathy Hochul announced a plan Wednesday to remove barriers for school bus drivers applying for a commercial driver's license

Gov. Kathy Hochul has announced a plan to remove barriers for school bus drivers applying for a commercial driver’s license.

At the governor’s direction, the Department of Motor Vehicles has implemented a federal waiver that allows school bus driver applicants to skip the part where they must prove they can repair the engine and drive.

This will make it easier to get a commercial license at a time when bus drivers are desperately needed, the governor said.

“The job of transporting and caring for our children is so important, and the need for more drivers throughout New York State is very real,” Hochul said in a statement.

The new licensees will be restricted to just driving school busses in New York state.
