The New York State Department of education is officially banning the use of facial recognition in schools.

Schools can still decide whether to use other kinds of biometric identifying technology, such as fingerprints, according to Commissioner Betty Rosa.

There has been a temporary ban on facial recognition since 2020.

The Department of Education has been weighing the pros and cons of the technology for the past three years.
