With back-to-school season, a teachers union wants to make sure it’s off to a safe start.

The New York State United Teachers, or NYSUT, represents teachers across Upstate New York. They held a virtual news conference Tuesday morning, releasing a list of recommendations for national, state and local leaders to best support safe public schools.

The recommendations include addressing social-emotional needs of students, ensuring appropriate staffing levels and fostering community partnerships.

NYSUT also says it’s in the process of rolling out a safe schools tool kit and training sessions for its members.
