Regents exams could soon be optional to graduate

Regents exams could be optional going forward.

The state Education Department released a plan Monday to phase out Regents tests as a requirement for high school diplomas.

The exams are given in January, June and August each year.

They will still be required this year, because nothing can change until the Board of Regents votes on the new plan. That vote is still a few months away.
