Tobacco use survey uncovers worrying trend among kids, teens

A new study shows some worrying trends in underage tobacco use.

Data from the 2022 National Youth Tobacco Survey shows about one in six high school students vaped, smoked cigarettes or used other tobacco products this year.

The study concluded that vaping is far and away the most popular option for school-aged kids, 14.1% of high schoolers, and even 3.3% of middle schoolers used the nicotine-delivery devices at least once in the past 30 days when the survey was taken.

Also, 3.7%, or about 1 million middle and high schoolers, smoked cigarettes or cigars.

In all, nearly 3.1 million underage students vaped, smoked or used other tobacco products in the past month.

The survey was conducted between January 18 and May 31 of this year.
