Most New Yorkers are probably familiar with the state’s Lemon Law. It protects car buyers from being scammed or misled into buying substandard or dissatisfying automobiles that aren’t all they’re cracked up to be.

But chances are, you are unfamiliar with the individual who gave us that protection.
His name is Stephen Mindell. But his friends and colleagues at the Attorney General’s office affectionately called him Sandy.
After serving in the AG’s office for more than 60 years, Sandy Mindell passed away on August 30th after a short illness.
Tish James released a statement Saturday night saying in part – “it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to a long-time public servant and dear friend: Sandy Mindell. Sandy helped build our consumer frauds and protection bureau and drafted the nation’s first ever Lemon Law.”
James goes on to say: Sandy was a friend and mentor to many throughout his time in our office, and he will be dearly missed.
Sandy Mindell was 89.
