The Sitterly Road Bridge on the Northway in Clifton Park is back open. The bridge was shut down after it was hit by a lift truck that was too tall. Construction on the new bridge began in December 2021. Its rebuild finished up ahead of schedule.
This bridge connects Clifton Park & Halfmoon. It is essential for travelers going to school and work, so the Department of Transportation says it was important for them to act quickly.
The regional director of DOT says a replacement bridge was designed in less than five months. He says the process normally takes 12 to 18 months. They were also able to have the bridge complete and ready for traffic five days earlier than they predicted. The bridge includes new sidewalks. It is also higher than the previous one by about a foot and a half.
The bridge’s shoulder is now about 6 feet wide on both sides. There are also two 11-foot wide travel lanes.
The new bridge also has a sidewalk for pedestrians.
Construction began in December 2021 after the bridge was damaged in April. This new design is about a foot and a half higher than the previous bridge. The hope is that the higher vertical clearance and new sidewalk will engage safety and mobility for everyone.
DOT says it was a team effort, and they appreciate the community’s patience.
