Stabilization work continues after Albany building collapse

Workers are making progress to stabilize a building on Central Avenue in Albany. Emergency workers are busy working to stabilize the building from both inside and outside. One of them told NewsChannel 13 the crews would likely be there a while.

The building partially collapsed on Wednesday, with bricks raining on the sidewalk and street below.

One lane of traffic is now open in the area.

Meantime, nearby business owners are frustrated over how this has affected them.

We are learning more about what may have caused part of the facade to come crashing down from a building in Albany this week.

Bricks came tumbling down Wednesday morning at 30 central avenue.

The city’s buildings and regulatory department director tells us that the buildings on either side of 30 central avenue were not affected.

The city engineer believes that ongoing deterioration is to blame.

We’re told that water was getting behind the first and second layers of brick.

And during freeze thaw cycles, the bricks would separate from each other and deteriorate the mortar creating the shearing that happened.
