A New York law prohibiting hate speech on social media is being challenged.
The federal lawsuit was just filed against New York State Attorney General Letitia James by the Volokh
Conspiracy Legal Blog and the Peter Thiel-backed video site Rumble Inc. They claim New York’s law will hurt online services and seek to silence unfavorable but constitutional protected expression.
The new law – taking effect Saturday, Dec. 3 – requires social media networks to provide and maintain a clear and easily accessible mechanism for people to report incidents of hateful conduct.
The law was passed following a mass shooting in Buffalo.
The Volokh Conspiracy is run by University of California Law School Professor Eugene Volokh.
Rumble is seen as a right-wing alternative to YouTube and claims to “create technologies that are immune to cancel culture.”
