Albany High School Junior Franz Gopaulsingh is one of five students who put a report together – a project by the Underground Railroad Education Center – that found “The Philip Schuyler statue should be removed from its present location” outside Albany City Hall.
Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan told NewsChannel 13 in an exclusive interview last week the statue’s days are numbered.
The group collectively felt the statue should move because of Schuyler’s history as a slave owner.
Gopaulsingh is the student behind the new name for the Philip Schuyler Achievement Academy – an elementary school in the Albany district. The name changes this July to The Roots Academy.
Gopaulsingh spoke with NewsChannel 13’s Subrina Dhammi about the amount of research that went into the report, and where he thinks the statue should go next.
