50+ cats found in Troy home

Mohawk Hudson Humane Society removed 15 cats from a home at 42 Lincoln Ave. in Troy on Monday.

Animal control was at the home along with code enforcement and police.

Some of the animals had died, according to Andrew Fiumano, The Director of Outreach and Humane Law Enforcement. It was hard to distinguish if the bodies found were adult cats, kittens or wildlife because of their condition, he said.

The cats alive suffered various infections.

“We’re seeing signs of upper respiratory infection and eye infection, which is very common for cats in these living conditions. You’ll see some of the goop coming out of the eyes discharge from the nose, so it mostly appears to be medical issues,” Fiumano said.

One woman told NewsChannel 13 she just moved in and is very concerned for herself and newborn.

The Rensselaer County Health Department and Adult Protective Services are working with the city to resolve this, according to the deputy mayor.

The next steps will be where to place all these cats once they’re removed from the home. Animal shelters are already full, so this won’t be an easy task.
