Kaylin Gillis’ father is suing the man accused of killing her.
This story was first reported by the Times Union.
Gillis’ father, Andrew Gillis, is suing Kevin Monahan in Saratoga County Supreme Court for allegedly killing the Schuylerville woman on April 15. Gillis was a passenger in a Ford Explorer that had mistakenly driven up the driveway of Monahan’s home on Patterson Hill Road in Hebron, when Monahan allegedly came out of his house and fired shots.
“We’re claiming that both the shooter and his wife, who is a co-property owner, have civil responsibility to this family for taking this young girl’s life,” said Donald Boyajian, of the law firm of Dreyer Boyajian, attorney for the family.
The lawsuit claims that the driveway “appeared to be a dirt road and was poorly marked” and that other people traveling along Patterson Hill Road mistakenly turned into the Monahans’ driveway or used it as a means to turn around.
Boyajian also wrote that Monahan’s wife, Jinx Monahan, “knew that it was common” for her husband to “become threatened and agitated” when people erroneously drove up the driveway. However, he failed to make improvements to the property.
This civil case is separate from the criminal case Monahan is facing in Washington County Court. Monahan, 65, has been charged with second-degree murder, reckless endangerment and tampering with evidence.
If convicted, he could be sentenced to up to 25 years to life in prison.
