Troy Police investigate damage, theft of Kia, Hyundai vehicles
Troy Police are investigating an increase in damage and thefts of vehicles, particularly Kia and Hyundai vehicles.
Police said the majority of cases involve damage to the windows of the vehicle and an unsuccessful attempt at starting the vehicle’s ignition. Officers have responded to 30 incidents of criminal mischief to vehicles and five vehicle thefts so far in 2023, police said.
The vehicle thefts are typically a result of a security flaw where they can be started without a key. A steering wheel lock can be used to prevent these thefts. Also, police are encouraging vehicle owners to park vehicles in garages in well-lit areas.
Police do not believe one individual is responsible for all of these thefts. Three individuals, including two juveniles and one adult, have been arrested in recent weeks in connection to Kia and Hyundai vehicle thefts.
