Hoosick Falls finds new municipal source to replace community’s toxic water
Construction is underway on a permanent water transmission line to provide a new water source for the village of Hoosick Falls.
The project is part of an agreement between New York state, Saint Gobain and Honeywell to address PFOA contamination from historic industrial operations at the McCaffrey Street facility and other sites in the village.
The new underground piping system will bring a permanent clean water supply into this village.
While announcing the new project, DEC Commissioner Basil Seggos labeled the Hoosick Falls drinking water dilemma the toughest moment his agency has ever had to deal with in its history. What happened in this tiny village rose to become a national issue.
This all began about a decade ago, when a Hoosick Falls resident discovered a link between drinking water in this community and mass illness.
The village tried stopgap measures to alleviate the water problem, but no permanent solution was ever put in place.
The significance to this community can’t be understated.
