Nonprofit grocery store to open in Troy
TROY (WNYT) – Local government officials and the media were given a preview of Bargain Grocery in Troy Friday. The store is scheduled to open later this summer.
The stores goal is to provide affordable food in an area with high food insecurity. An estimated one in nine New York families with children do not have enough to eat some of the time or often, according to a report from the New York State Comptroller’s Office.
Bargain Grocery, located at 558 River St., is the second brick and mortar Bargain Grocery to open in New York. The first store opened in Utica in 2018.
Bargain Grocery is backed by Compassion Coalition, a nonprofit-organization that donates food and other goods in Utica. Bargain Grocery Troy is sponsored by Empire State Development and First Columbia.
The store is able to offer food at a low price due to strategic buying and through working with vendors.
“Bargain Grocery partners with local and national vendors by buying their over produced food items and donations. The price point of these items are significantly reduced to help the community buy affordable quality foods,” it says on the stores website.
