DMV launches new digital driver’s license option for smartphones
The DMV is launching the New York Mobile ID. It’s a highly secure digital version of a state-issued driver license, learner’s permit or ID on a smartphone.
Anyone who has a valid, state-issued driver’s license, learner’s permit, or non-driver ID can download the app.
The announcement was made Tuesday at LaGuardia Airport in New York City, which is one of nearly 30 airports across the country where the new mobile ID will be accepted at Transportation Security Administration checkpoints.
“It helps you get through security quickly and easily. You don’t have to dig through your purse or your carry-on for your driver’s license, you just have it right on your phone,” said Lisa Koumjian, the Deputy Commissioner of the New York State DMV. “You don’t need to pull up your boarding pass. When you use the NY Mobile ID, the TSA will know automatically whether or not you have a boarding pass.”
The app is available to Apple iOS and Android users through Google Play or the App Store.
The mobile ID won’t be accepted everywhere, so you should still carry your physical ID with you.
