The bridge carrying Riverview Road over the Adirondack Northway in Saratoga County will remain closed until further notice after it was struck Tuesday morning.

An excavator that was being towed on a trailer was traveling south, when it struck the bridge on the border of Clifton Park and Halfmoon, according to the Department of Transportation.

DOT officials are assessing the damage and repair options.

Motorists on Riverview Road should follow a signed detour using Crescent, VanVranken, Clamsteam and Dunsbach Roads. The Northway remains open in both directions. However, motorists should be prepared for lane closures to accommodate ongoing bridge and road inspections.
