Rensselaer Police: Not enough evidence to charge staffer in alleged physical contact of student

Police: Not enough evidence for incident at Rensselaer school

Details affecting local, regional and national news events of the day are provided by the NewsChannel 13 Team, as well as updates on weather and traffic.

Rensselaer Police tell 13Investigates there is not enough evidence to support an arrest after an investigation into an incident between a student and an employee at a local high school.

13Investigates reported in May that it allegedly involved physical contact between a female student and a male staffer at Rensselaer High School.

At the time, Superintendent of Schools Joe Kardash confirmed that they received a complaint from a student.

However, police say it was not credible.

13Investigates has filed records requests for the findings of the police investigation.

We will update you when and if we get those reports.

School Superintendent Kardash issued the following statement to NewsChannel 13 in response to our inquiry about the investigation:

“Due to the nature of the complaint that the district received, we took every precaution to protect the wellbeing and confidentiality of all involved. The district hired an independent investigator to make sure that all possible information was collected. After over a month of information gathering and evaluation, the investigator came to a similar conclusion as the separate police investigation. They ‘concluded by a preponderance of evidence’ that the staff member did not take the inappropriate action that they were accused of.

“Appropriate notifications were disseminated to the involved parties.  We are happy to welcome our staff member back.  We would like to thank everyone in our Junior-Senior High School and our community for their patience and respect for the process in this matter.”
