Troy police are investigating the drowning death of a man on a bicycle. Police say he rode into the Hudson River as they were trying to stop and question him Monday night.

Police say they tried to stop a man on a bike on Second Avenue near 116th Street, but they say he took off and went into the alley, then onto First Avenue, with police following with lights and siren on.

A neighbor told us what she saw.

“From our yard we saw the officer coming through the alleyway with the lights and sirens going. A gentleman on his bicycle that was refusing to stop and kept going. He came over here to the parking lot of the post office. The officer went to get out as I’m standing on the corner from the alleyway and then he took off on the bike in between the house there. I’m thinking that he’s just ditching the bike and running and so I went over there and two of the officers were in water looking for this gentleman that they didn’t find.”

Authorities say the man went down a driveway, and over an embankment into the Hudson River.

Police say they tried to rescue him and an officer went into the water, but they later found the man dead underwater.

Police say they were on Second avenue last night in response to recent community complaints about suspicious activity, and a neighbor said there are many issues.

“Second avenue is the drug dealings that go on and the prostitution, especially coming from the building there where they’re actually supposed to be helping the people and I don’t feel that there’s any help for them people. They do what they want. They come out and get their fix and go back in, and just a lot of break-ins from individuals that live in that building over there.”

Police say all of the interaction from the initial contact to the rescue efforts was captured on both bodycam and car video and that they plan to release that video to the public soon. They also say that they’ve notified the New York Attorney General’s Office.

Authorities have not yet released the man’s identity.
