State giving $10 million to demolish Central Warehouse

State granting $10 million to tear down Albany’s Central Warehouse eyesore

New York state is stepping in to finally tear down the abandoned Central Warehouse building.

The building has stood boarded up, abandoned and dilapidated for decades. It is undeniably an urban eyesore.

Gov. Kathy Hochul said she often sees the building when she’s in downtown Albany.

Gov. Kathy Hochul admitted even she can’t escape its line of sight when she’s in downtown Albany. That’s why she believes it’s time for this infamous inner-city ugliness to come down.

“We are announcing $10 million from New York’s Restore program to accomplish what has been so challenging in the past, and that is the demolition of this tower of neglect, the Central Warehouse,” Hochul said.

The warehouse removal is only a small part of the game changing infrastructure projects now planned for the Albany riverfront. After well over a century of service, the old rusted Livingston avenue railroad bridge will also be replaced.

“My philosophy is undo the wrongs of the past now. Don’t let more time waste,” Hochul said.

She wants to invest $634 million to build a new railroad bridge that crosses the Hudson to accommodate both Amtrak passenger trains and freight trains, creating two-way traffic, and allowing increased speed limits.
