Police: Missing Bennington County man died in car crash

A Bennington County man reported missing died in a car crash.
Vermont State Police were looking for Harold Lavanway, 73, of Readsboro.
He was last seen on Friday traveling south toward the Monroe Bridge area in Massachusetts.
Investigators received a report Monday of a vehicle over an embankment on Tunnel Street in the town of Whitingham. The vehicle matched the description of Lavanway’s 2011 Honda Civic, police said.
Troopers found Lavanway dead in the vehicle.
An initial investigation determined that Lavanway was traveling north on Tunnel Street and hit a left-hand curve. As the road straightened, Lavanway veered off the northbound shoulder and down 10 feet over an embankment.
An autopsy is pending.
The cause is under investigation.
