Man gets 7 years in prison for dragging trooper with ATV

A West Sand Lake man gets 7 years in prison for dragging trooper with ATV.

A Rensselaer County man was sentenced on Friday to 7 years in prison for dragging a state trooper with an ATV.

Joseph Dominy, 19, of West Sand Lake, was arrested after the incident on March 1 just before 5 p.m. The trooper attempted to stop Dominy who was illegally operating the ATV in the area of Johnny Cake Lane in Sand Lake.

Dominy refused and argued with the troopers. He took off, and one of the troopers was dragged by the ATV for about 200 yards and was entrapped under the vehicle, according to the Rensselaer County District Attorney’s Office.

The trooper had a life-threatening injury to their lower body and needed surgery.

Dominy continued to drive the ATV and then hid it. Police found it and he was arrested.

The incident was captured in the trooper’s body worn camera.

Dominy pleaded guilty in May. He also must serve 3 years of post-release supervision.

“His actions affected the life and career of a Law Enforcement Officer, if he obeyed the officer, this never would have happened,” said Chief Assistant District Attorney Matt Hauf in a statement. “Fortunately, body worn cameras worn by the trooper captured the incident while the officer was being dragged, this helped us gather the evidence we needed to prosecute him.”
