Fulton County sheriff’s deputy honored for saving baby

Fulton County Sheriff's Deputy Nathan Marshall is honored for saving the life of a baby girl in July.

JOHNSTOWN, N.Y. (WNYT) – Deputy Nathan Marshall was recognized by the Fulton County Board of Supervisors in Johnstown on Monday afternoon.

Before the proclamation, the crowd watched the NewsChannel 13 story on the emergency response that day. It is dramatic body camera video.

It was chaos on that day in July, when a baby girl was bluish and limp and her family was frantic.

The deputy does CPR until the baby cries. It’s a good sign. She’s breathing again.

As the deputy said at the time, the department had recently gone through CPR training. He put that training into practice.

With new awards and accolades, the deputy remains humble.

“You can imagine anybody in that situation. It’s their child. Police officers, we’re all human beings, we all have families, so I can only imagine what that felt like at that moment,” Deputy Marshall said.

He is also a Reservist.

“We hear so much negative that when something like this happens, we like to recognize it and I thank the Board of Supervisors for recognizing it for us, because they represent the people of the county in showing that they respect and honor what their deputies do,” said Fulton County Sheriff Richard Giardino. “It is a big plus for the morale and for the public to know.”

The Fulton County Board of Supervisors also approved the police body camera system that provided the video of the deputy’s life-saving actions.

“This situation is an infant and isolated in that way, but every day, we comfort people with family hassles. We get children out of violent situations. We help something as simple as finding a kid’s bicycle and the joy that the kid has when we return it,” said the sheriff. “Our deputies do an excellent job every day, and I want to thank the board again for recognizing their efforts. I think that that’s super important because it sends a message.”
