One person dead in police-involved shooting in Saratoga Springs
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (WNYT) – One person has died in a police-involved shooting in Saratoga Springs.
This started around 4 p.m. Wednesday, as police searched for a man who threatened to hurt himself. That man, James Dellea, 48, of Hillsdale, was found in the parking lot of the Albany – Saratoga Speedway on State Route 9 in The Town Malta.
“He failed to follow lawful commands to exit his vehicle and fled the scene. A low-speed vehicle pursuit was initiated,” said New York State Police.
He then led police on a low-speed chase, ending at the Bethel Saratoga church on Route 9.
Dellea refused to leave his car, police said. He then displayed a gun, and a trooper fatally shot him.
“Mr. Dellea again refused to exit his vehicle, despite numerous commands to do so. Troopers then observed Mr. Dellea to be in possession of a firearm. Subsequently, Mr. Dellea brandished the firearm, at which time one of the troopers fired his weapon, fatally striking him,” police said.
State Route 9 was closed from Old Post Road all the way down to East West Road due to the ongoing investigation.
NewsChannel 13 spoke with Pastor John Gentile from the Bethel Church, and he says he feels for everyone involved.
“Somebody died in our parking lot, and it was, under terrible conditions. So we just pray. I’m praying. I’ve been praying for the police officer. I’ve been praying for the family of the individual, who died. And, of course, praying for the community,” said Gentile.
The Attorney General’s Office is part of the investigation, which is required in New York when there is a deadly officer-involved shooting.
There is currently no threat to the public, police said.
