Honduran national gets 20 years to life in prison for killing Troy man

A Honduran national in the country illegally was sentenced Monday to 20 years to life in prison for killing a Troy man one year ago.

Carlos Corrales-Ramirez, 21, had previously pleaded guilty to second-degree murder. He had admitted to stabbing  Jairo Jesus Hernandez Sanchez more than 10 times with a folding knife and then fleeing the area, according to the Rensselaer County District Attorney’s Office. The incident happened on Sept. 2, 2023 at around 1:10 p.m. in the vicinity of River Street and Douw Street.

Several people stopped to give aid to the victim, who died from his injuries.

Troy Police found Corrales-Ramirez in the vicinity of Arnold E. Fallon Apartments on Sept. 3, 2023 around 4 p.m. and arrested him.

Corrales-Ramirez also had been wanted in a Maryland stabbing. He had been arrested in Champlain, N.Y. in March by Border Patrol agents and turned over to State Police. He was held in Clinton County Jail for 90 days and then released because he had not been picked up by Maryland authorities.
