Four Albany Police officers were injured in a two-car crash that happened on Wednesday afternoon.

Police Chief Eric Hawkins said the incident started at 3:40 p.m. when officers responded to a domestic in the area of Slingerlands Street and Second Avenue. There was a request for more units because of a resistant suspect.

While trying to take a man into custody, the two officers were exposed to powder cocaine that the suspect had in his possession.

Two separate units responded from another part of town. Those units were in the area of Madison Avenue and Quail Street, and they ultimately crashed into each other just before 4 p.m., according to Hawkins.

All four officers have head injuries, according to Hawkins. Two have them to a severe degree. One has a severe leg injury. The injuries are not life-threatening.

Mayor Kathy Sheehan said that they have been able to speak with all four of the officers that were injured.

38-year-old Rahmel Carter of Albany has been charged with one count of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 2^nd, one count of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 3^rd, two counts of Unlawfully Possessing or Selling Noxious Material, one count of Obstructing Governmental Administration, one count of Tampering with Physical Evidence, one count of Criminal Contempt 1^st, one count of Harassment 2^nd, and one count of Criminally Using Drug Paraphernalia 2^nd.

He’s scheduled to be arraigned in Albany City Criminal Court Thursday morning.
