Police: Ex-Schuylerville schools leader was 3x too drunk to drive
The former superintendent of the Schuylerville Central School District is accused of driving with a blood alcohol content three times the legal limit.
State Police stopped Gregg T. Barthelmas, 50, of Ballston Spa, on Acland Boulevard in Milton around 10:30 a.m. on Oct. 9 for a traffic violation. He recorded a blood alcohol concentration of 0.24%. The legal limit is 0.08%.
Barthelmas was charged with DWI. He was issued tickets and due in Milton Town Court on Oct. 30.
Barthelmas was superintendent of Schuylerville Central School District from 2022 until he requested a personal leave of absence in late February. James Ducharme, the high school principal, was appointed as acting superintendent. During a meeting in May, the Board of Education put Barthelmas on paid administrative leave. The board said it would have no further comment as it is a personnel matter.
Barthelmas resigned in June. and the board appointed Ryan Sherman, who preceded Barthelmas as superintendent, as the new superintendent and gave him a five-year contract.
