New signs remind drivers to watch for blind pedestrians

There are new signs asking drivers to be cautious of blind pedestrians. The State Commission for the Blind showed off the new traffic signs Tuesday in celebration of White Cane Awareness Day.

The “Yield to the Blind” signs are located just outside the State Office of Children and Family Services at the intersection of Washington Street and Third Avenue in Rensselaer.

The event also featured a demonstration of how to use a white cane.

Under state law, all vehicles must come to a complete stop and give blind or visually-impaired people the right of way when they approach an intersection or crosswalk.
