A recent study found people who spent time with a therapy dog while in the emergency room reported experiencing less pain after.
“Just physically, being around animals releases some positive neurotransmitters in the brain,” said Dr. Jane Manno, a psychologist. “Studies have shown serotonin and dopamine, so there’s a biological component.
It decreases blood pressure, and decreases the stress hormone, cortisol.”
Manno also recommends to get a dog if you are feeling anxious or depressed.
That’s because dogs can help you get out of the house more, and deal with feelings of loneliness.
Dogs also love unconditionally, so they won’t judge.
