CANAAN, NY – More and more people are skipping the grocery store, and opting to get their Thanksgiving turkeys from local farms.

One very busy farm this season is YundWell Pastured Poultry in Canaan, N.Y. They take an all-natural approach to raising their turkeys.

Their birds spend all their time outdoors grazing in fields, running around, and stretching their wings next to their brothers and sisters.

YundWell’s owner, Mike Yund, says they don’t use hormones or other treatments in their birds. The turkeys are fed a natural diet of seeds, water, and whatever else they find outdoors in the grass.

“I don’t think turkeys could be raised in a much better situation,” farm owner Mike Yund said.

The free-range farm business is a growing industry. Yundwell raised 150 turkeys last year. They did 250 turkeys this year. Next year, with the way demand is booming, Yund said they might try to raise 500 birds.

“I think the people that are choosing pasture-raised are caring about the quality of life of the farmer, the workers, the land, and the birds,” Yund said.

You can find Yundwell Pastured Poultry on their website.

Just about all of their 250 turkeys are already reserved this Thanksgiving, but you can always make a reservation for next year. They also sell free-range chicken and eggs all year.
