Schumer: Legislation in Senate will improve Social Security for New Yorkers

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer announced he will bring the Social Security Fairness Act to the Senate floor next week.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer announced he will bring the Social Security Fairness Act to the Senate floor next week.

The House-passed bipartisan legislation will expand benefits for New York’s hardworking firefighters, teachers, police and other workers, and increase retirement payments for 35,000 New Yorkers.

The Social Security Fairness Act will repeal two provisions that reduce Social Security benefits – the Windfall Elimination Provision, and the Government Pension Offset.

The WEP reduces Social Security benefits of workers who also receive pensions from a federal, state, or local government for employment not covered by social security.
The GPO reduces Social Security spousal or survivor benefits for spouses, widows, and widowers who also receive federal pensions.

“The House already passed this bill, and this is a chance for senators to do the right thing for our public servants. I’m ready to act on this much-needed fix to protect Social Security benefits for millions of retirees across America,” Schumer said in a statement.
