Greenfield man pleads guilty to weapons charges

A Greenfield man has admitted to possessing two assault rifles and high-capacity ammunition feeding devices.

Joseph J. Samascott, 49, pleaded guilty in Saratoga County Court on Wednesday to 10 counts of criminal possession of a weapon as well as criminal mischief.

This stemmed from an arrest on March 24. Sheriff’s deputies responded to his residence, where Samascott threatened to harm himself and engage in a shootout with law enforcement, according to the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office.

Samascott had two loaded assault rifles and six high-capacity magazines in his vehicle, when he attempted to leave his property.

Samascott also was accused of damaging property.

He eventually surrendered and was arrested without incident. He was taken to the hospital for evaluation and treatment.

Samascott faces up to 8 years in prison when sentenced on March 27.
