Gov. Hochul proposes free community college, higher Child Tax Credit
Albany, N.Y. (WNYT) – New York Gov. Kathy Hochul says every child will get free breakfast and free lunch at school.
She also wants to make the Child Tax Credit available for children under the age of four for the first time, and triple the maximum benefit to $1,000 for babies and children up to four years old and next year, boost the credit for children ages 4 -16 to $500.
As for child care, the governor said she’s dedicating $110 million to build new child care centers and renovate existing ones because, as many parents know, daycare can run more than $20,000 a year and that’s like a second rent.
She called education the great equalizer, and she plans to make community college free for older students who go into some high-demand fields. The governor says that will also help to fill critical jobs in essential industries.
Those would be select associates degrees in things like nursing, teaching, technology, and engineering.
“We’re going to make community college completely free for students ages 25-55,” said the governor. “Completely free, everything, books, transportation, for those who enter high-demand fields like advanced manufacturing, education and healthcare. We have so many vacancies. Think about this.. if you want to change jobs and you’re not sure what you want to be, you can go back to community college on us.”
