Human composting could be new end of life alternative in NY

It’s not something people typically enjoy talking about – end of life planning and figuring out what happens to your body after you’ve passed on.

Now, more people are talking about a new option that’s catching on across the country, and it sounds a little unusual.

This new option would essentially let you compost yourself.

If you’re like most people, your first reaction is they want to do what? However, it’s an idea that’s already happening around the country.

Global warming and ever-expanding cemeteries are just part of what spurred the development of the human composting industry.

Formally called "natural organic reduction," companies like Recompose, the first in the nation to offer the end of life alternative, have started embracing the "human composting" moniker.

"At first, I thought it was too gruesome or something, but it’s very accurate and people love it," said Katrina Spade, the founder and CEO of Recompose. "I knew that I didn’t want to be cremated or buried, but that I wanted something natural."
