Saratoga Springs man sentenced in social security number scam

A Saratoga Springs man was sentenced for misusing a social security number.

Markhawn Berning, 37, admitted to using the number to obtain unemployment insurance benefits, including federal pandemic-related benefits.

He falsely presented the fake number to the Labor Department between May and July of last year.

He was sentenced to a year of probation, and needs to pay a $2,000 fine as well as $16,383 in restitution to New York state.
