Retired Saratoga, Belmont race caller Tom Durkin content to watch without stress
He provided the soundtrack to the biggest races in the country for a generation, including calling 24 Belmont stakes. However, Tom Durkin gets to watch the race from Saratoga Springs this year, and enjoy it without the stress of having to call it.
During a career that stretched 40 years, Durkin called all of the biggest, including dozens of Breeders’ Cup and Triple Crown races for NBC, and 24 Belmont Stakes.
He didn’t just open the mic and start talking. He prepared, studying past performances and searching for story lines.
He views the horses and jockeys as the stars in a drama.
He called some fantastic finishes, it turns out Durkin didn’t know when he was finished calling the biggest races. Despite retiring at the end of the 2014 season, he came out of retirement last year to call the Belmont.
This weekend, he gets to relax and enjoy the first Triple Crown race this city has ever seen.
Take a look at what Durkin’s been doing since he retired by watching the video of Mark Mulholland’s story.
