Watervliet gives hometown Olympian his own day
An Olympian was honored in Watervliet on Thursday.
Melique Garcia competed in the 100-meter dash at the Paris Olympics. He represented Honduras, which is where his father, Melvin Lorenzo was born.
Garcia finished in 5th place in a preliminary heat, with a time of 10.7 seconds, missing a spot in the quarterfinals by less than half of a second.
Garcia was born in New York City, but moved to Watervliet with his parents at a young age.
He was a 4-sport standout for the Cannoneers, lettering in football, wrestling, along with both indoor and outdoor track. He was also an honors graduate.
Garcia was also a 3-time all-American track star at SUNY Cortland.
He is currently coaching youth football and the Watervliet track team.
