Ex-employee at juvenile detention center accused of rape facing civil lawsuit

A former employee at a juvenile detention center, who is already facing dozens of sex abuse charges, is now accused of raping a teenager while he was incarcerated.

A former employee at a juvenile detention center, who is already facing dozens of sex abuse charges, is now accused of raping a teenager while they were incarcerated.

The lawsuit was filed against Maya Hayes, a former psychologist at Brookwood Secure Center. The Columbia County facility houses young people who have been convicted and sentenced for violent felonies.

Hayes was fired in 2022.

Hayes allegedly sexually abused the victim in her office, and the lawsuit said other staff members knew about the abuse, and made jokes to the alleged victim about it.

NewsChannel 13 reported last April that Hayes was charged with 65 counts of criminal sex act and three counts of rape.

The Columbia County DA told NewsChannel 13 at the time that Hayes would make patients do sex acts, and tell them if they refused, she would make sure they stayed at the center.
