Johnsburg, Minerva school districts consider merger
Two North Country school districts are considering a merger.
Johnsburg and Minerva are studying the idea.
The public will have an opportunity to express their thoughts about a merger on Monday night, when the two school boards are scheduled to meet separately.
Each board will decide whether to proceed with the merger talks and put the matter out to the community for a nonbinding straw vote.
Minerva has around 120 students and Johnsburg has just under 300.
The New York State Education Department said that if merged, the newly combined district would receive almost $15 million in reorganization incentive aid over 14 years.
The new district would get about $1.5 million in aid for the first five years and then every subsequent year, the aid would be reduced by 4% until it goes away.
Both meetings begin at 5:30 p.m. and will take place their respective gymnasiums. Public comment is limited to two minutes.
