Lake Placid not needed as backup 2028 Olympic site
The 2026 Winter Olympics will not take place in Lake Placid after all.
Sledding events for next year’s Winter Games will now officially take place in Cortina, Italy.
Lake Placid was previously designated as a possible Plan B site for bobsled, luge, and skeleton events. This is because the sliding track in Cortina recently underwent a $128 million rebuild. After several tests, the track in Italy passed inspection. If it had failed, Lake Placid would have been next in line to host those events.
However, the door isn’t completely closed as the Olympic Regional Development Authority says it already is impossible talks for future collaborations.
Lake Placid formerly hosted the Olympics back in 1980.
