Advocacy groups push for ‘bottle bill’ modernization
Advocacy groups are urging state lawmakers to approve a "bigger and better" bottle bill to save money, reduce litter, and help curb New York's growing trash problem.
New York could save at least $40 million and possibly over $100 million if the Legislature approves a bill to modernize the state’s “Bottle Bill,” according to a report.
The report, from think tank Eunomia, was commissioned by a group of environmental, civic, labor and business organizations.
The state’s bottle deposit has remained at 5 cents since the law was instituted four decades ago. Legislation would increase it to 6 cents and expand the number of bottles that could be eligible to be redeemed.
The report mentioned Troy, saying it could see savings between $40,000 and $60,000 per year in municipal collection costs.
In addition, increasing the deposit would lead to another 5.5 billion beverage containers recycled and taken out of garbage collections, or being thrown out as litter.
