Schenectady woman accused of getting illegal Social Security benefits

A Schenectady woman is facing federal Social Security fraud charges.

Destiny Brown, 45, is accused of applying for and receiving benefits in the name of her deceased wife’s children, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said. Brown had gotten the benefits after the Schenectady County Department of Social Services removed the children from her custody, according to prosecutors.

Brown was arraigned and released pending further proceedings.

If convicted, she faces a maximum term of 5 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.
